This activity asks students to analyze a series of documents that discuss the experiences of different social classes during the Industrial Revolution. Their goal is to discover how the great changes of the era impacted various groups in different ways. Prior to assigning this curriculet it would be important for student's to have learned basic facts about how the IR began, and what impact it had on people's lives.

Industrialization Inquiry

In 1833 many people in London suffered and died from the diseases diphtheria, scrofula, and cholera. People at the time believed that these diseases were associated with “the stench” that came from the River Thames. It is now understood that the extreme overcrowding and lack of sanitation brought about by industrialization and urbanization helped rapidly spread disease. (This annotation contains an image)
