Warriors #2: Fire and Ice

K5vjbv1xjo0z t

Deep in the heart of the forest, four clans of warrior cats coexist in uneasy harmony -- but uncertain times are upon them, and dangers threaten the precarious balance of the forest.

Fireheart is a ThunderClan warrior cat now, but his troubles are far from over. As the chill of winter sets in, the cats of rival RiverClan grow restless, while WindClan is weak and facing threats from all sides.

As tensions build to an explosive climax, Fireheart faces not only imminent battle, but betrayal from within his own Clan.

A few things to know about some of the words in this book. Twolegs are humans. That seems logical. Humans walk on TWO LEGS. And the Thunderpath is a road and monsters are the cars. You have to put yourself in the place of a cat for it to make sense. Sounds like fun!
Where do you think WindClan is going to make their new home?

Chapter 1

Inferring is an important skill for good readers. Watch the video below to learn about inferring and textual evidence. What can you infer about how Firepaw is feeling from the highlighted section?  (This annotation contains a video)
What is the most important secret carried over from the first Warriors book "Into the Wild" that Firestar feels the need to reveal to Bluestar?
Fireheart is turning out to be a complicated character. He is showing some aspects of his personality that are not necessarily all good. While he is the protagonist in the story, good authors make sure there is some depth or change to their main characters. Actually, it sounds like Fireheart is a realistic character. Will being a part of ThunderClan be all that matters to Fireheart?
Which phrase in the paragraph contains a simile? Identify the phrase and copy it down in the box below.
Cat behavior tells a great deal about what they are feeling. Tail flicking and body stiffening is a sign of irritation. Does this make sense with what Bluestar is being told by Fireheart?
If you were Fireheart, would you have told Bluestar about Ravenpaw and his suspicions about Tigerclaw OR would you have kept it a secret? Please explain why or why not.

Chapter 2

Just because Graystripe is now a warrior, doesn't mean he knows everything. Whitestorm needs to remind him to acknowlege the other Clan's honor. It looks like Graystripe has more to learn.
What happened to Brokenstar after he was banished from ShadowClan?
Bluestar is a very respected leader among the Clans. She is not afraid to use her voice and speak up if she thinks an injustice is being committed. How would you best describe Bluestar's leadership style at the Gathering? (This annotation contains an image)
How does Nightstar, Crookedstar and Bluestar behave in front of all the Clans? What does this say about each of them? This is how the author begins to develop and complicate the story. While all of them are leaders, their approaches are very different. Keep this in mind as you read; so if something changes you'll know to pay attention.

Chapter 3

In the highlighted sentence, what do you think the glaring eyes of the monsters on the Thunderpath are?
Graystripe and Fireheart have their first warrior mission! When something unexpected happens, as a reader, you need to ask yourself - why is this happening? Why did Bluestar choose the two newest warriors for the mission to find WindClan?
What's the worst thing you ever had to eat that you knew was good for you?

Chapter 4

Badgers are very fierce animals that live underground. They are capable of running up to 19 mph and can fight off even large animals such as wolves and bears. Perhaps Graystripe and Fireheart should avoid them and their dens!  (This annotation contains an image)
What camp are Fireheart and Graystripe looking for?
One of the things good readers do is to use context clues to help them figure out what unknown words mean. Based on the other words in the highlighted sentence, what do you think the copse means?

Chapter 5

Graystripe and Fireheart have gone further than any cat has gone past the Thunderpath. Take a look at the map below. The two cats have ventured into the top left hand corner of the map.  (This annotation contains an image)
What do you think is the "surge of emotion" Fireheart feels when he makes the connection to the images in his dream?
It's terrible that the WindClan cats have had to live in such an awful environment. Do you think differently about roads (ThunderPath) and cars (monsters) when you look at them through the eyes of a cat? Interesting how a change of perspective can change your thinking.

Chapter 6

Why do you think Tallstar feels the name Fireheart suits the ThunderClan warrior? Please give some examples from the story to explain your reasoning.
Imagine you are a WindClan cat and you must cross a busy road. Watch the video below to see how dangerous it is for cats in busy roadways. (This annotation contains a video)
What can you infer from the look Morningflower gives Fireheart?
Do you remember the rats Graystripe and Fireheart encountered in the first book? They were attacked and Bluestar ended up losing one of her lives. No wonder they are nervous about meeting up with any again. (This annotation contains an image)
What label is Fireheart having a hard time shedding?
How has Ravenpaw adjusted to life with Barley and as a loner?

Chapter 7

"Ominous prophecy" sounds like a pretty fancy phrase doesn't it? Don't worry. It's not too bad. Prophecy is a prediction for the future and ominous means threatening. So it means a threatening prediction. These cats rely on nature, stars and now clouds to help them figure out what is going on around them. Do you think Barkface is right? Do you think there will be a death among the cats today?
Oh no! Fireheart has suggested they cross over into RiverClan territory to save time on their journey home. Things have been going so well. Do you think they should take the short cut? And if they do, what do you think could happen?
A cat yowl is very different from a regular meow. It almost sounds like a young child wailing. Listen to the clip below which shows a cat yowling to get outside. Would you have thought that this sound could have been made by a cat? (This annotation contains a video)

Chapter 8

When you come across a word you don't know, one of the strategies to figure it out is called context clues. This means looking at all the words before and after to see if they can give you hints to what it means. Ask yourself, "is this a positive or negative word?" What does the highlighted word "foreboding" mean?
Is this what you picture Bluestar's den to look like? Each reader will have their own picture in their mind based on the author's description. The closer two readers are to the same picture, the more successful the author was in his or description. (This annotation contains an image)
Oh no! Fireheart is reminded that he did not grow up in ThunderClan and started out as a kittypet. Something always seems to happen and then someone brings it up. Is this Fireheart's fate forever?
Why isn't Graystripe as excited as Fireheart to receive their kit for warrior training?

Chapter 9

Both Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw were given names that match the colors of their fur. Below is an artist's drawing of Brackenpaw and Cinderpaw. Does that make more sense now? (This annotation contains an image)
How would you describe Fireheart's apprentice Cinderpaw's behavior so far? Use details from the story to support your description.
When prey is scarce, warriors will look to see where owls are hunting to help them find prey. Finding owl pods help them to survive by knowing where prey might be.
Adders are venomous viper snakes. They feeds on small animals, which could include small cats! They are not usually aggressive unless they are disturbed. Do you think a new apprentice like Cinderpaw could potentially disturb one? Below is a picture of an adder in the wild.  (This annotation contains an image)
Why did the kittypet scent stay with Fireheart long after he saw one earlier in the day?

Chapter 10

With Fireheart feeling the need to make a connection to his childhood, we are beginning to see the emerging theme of family and needing to be connected to where you came from. Please watch the video below to understand how a theme emerges in a novel.  (This annotation contains a video)
What sentence in the highlighted section shows that Fireheart's sister still feels warmth towards him?
Chapters 1 - 10 Quiz

Chapter 11

Cats love to find warm spots to lay down upon. Even housecats will find a sunny spot in front of a window to warm themselves. Below is a picture of what Brackenpaw might have looked like checking out Sunningrocks during his training. (This annotation contains an image)
What did Fireheart do wrong when he catches the vole?
While Fireheart, as a mentor, needs to be protective of Cinderpaw, who does he need to try and protect near the river?
Thank goodness a RiverClan cat was around to save Graystripe.  (This annotation contains an image)
Hmmm...do you notice a little interest brewing between Graystripe and the RiverClan cat who saves him? This sounds like a complicated situation. A good author will create complications in the story and with characters. Do you think anything will happen between the two cats?

Chapter 12

Cinderpaw is not afraid of Tigerclaw. As a reader, you know more than Cinderpaw knows about Tigerclaw. This is an example of dramatic irony - when the reader knows something the character doesn't. Knowing what you know about Tigerclaw, are you afraid of him? Please use examples from the novel to explain why or why not.
It sounds like Graystripe is stealing away to a secret place. Fireheart has his own secrets as well. Everyday he sneaks off to visit his sister, Princess. This seems to be another emerging theme: secrets and dishonesty. Even Cinderpaw had to lie to save Fireheart and Graystripe from getting into trouble. What other instances of lying have happened or are talked about in the book?
What additional challenge do the apprentices face with their assessment?
Although they are brother and sister, Brackenpaw and Cinderpaw have very different personalities. While Cinderpaw is very energetic and excited about everything, Brackenpaw is very different. How would you best describe him based on the hunting scene described on this page?

Chapter 13

This is the second time Graystripe leaves camp without anyone knowing where he is or what he is doing. Where do YOU think Graystripe disappears to everyday?  (This annotation contains an image)
What is unusual about Graystripe's explanation that his cold is no better and he must stay in camp a while longer?
Whiteclaw was Leopardfur's friend and Clanmate so it is understandable why he would still be angry. It was an unfortunate accident, but that doesn't matter to Leopardfur. He wants revenge. (This annotation contains an image)
Uh oh. Here is another example of some dishonesty. It seems like all these examples are a little more than just a coincidence. Do you think all of this lying and telling untruths will catch up to ThunderClan? Is it foreshadowing something to come?

Chapter 14

Why is Fireheart upset with Graystripe? Please find a sentence from this page that proves Fireheart's displeasure and use it in your answer.
Cats get colds just like us. Whitecough is similar to us getting a cold. We may cough up some clear liquid, but it usually goes away on its own. Greencough is when it gets a little more serious - like when we get bronchitis. Can you guess why it's called greencough? Yuck!

Chapter 15

Why has Fireheart snuck away from camp to find Silverstream?
Divided loyalites. This is the emerging theme we talked about in previous chapters. Can you come up with all the examples of divided loyalties in the book so far?

Chapter 16

Which of the following sentences does NOT indicate that Fireheart is very worried about Bluestar?
Catnip is a favorite among kittypets. Cats will roll and twist and drool when playing with catnip. They become downright silly! Then they get CRAZY...and then they become really tired. Watch the video below of a kittypet opening a drawer and finding the stash of catnip. It's a classic case of silly, crazy and tired! (This annotation contains a video)
Oh no. Has Cinderpaw's eagerness gotten her into trouble? The author is creating suspense by having her go missing. Now, we HAVE to read on to find out where she is.

Chapter 17

Do you remember what Bluestar said to Fireheart about Cinderpaw's personality after her assessment? What is it about Cinderpaw's personality that made her disobey Fireheart's instruction to stay in camp?
Don't you wish you could get into the mind of Bluestar to experience StarClan? With the story written in third-person limited point of view from Fireheart's perspective - we will not know unless Fireheart somehow goes to StarClan. (This annotation contains an image)
While snow can be fun for us, it is very serious for the cats in the forest. Their food goes underground and makes it much more difficult to catch. While it may be fun to play in, with what has happened to Bluestar and Cinderpaw, the atmosphere in the camp is not very playful. (This annotation contains an image)
What two cats know that Bluestar is on her final life?

Chapter 18

This is the first time Fireheart experiences snow. Watch the video below to see some kittypets discovering snow. But, look closely because the kittypets look like Fireheart, Darkstripe and Leopardfur. (This annotation contains a video)
StarClan is all the departed leaders of the Clans who watch over them as stars in the sky. This suggests that fate plays a part in many of the things that happen to the clan. Fate is the idea that things happen out of someone's control and relies on some kind of supernatural power. So, does the idea of fate make sense when Speckletail says, "But in the end, it's up to StarClan"? (This annotation contains an image)
Why do you think Fireheart tells Princess all the terrible things that have happened to ThunderClan in the last few days?
While it is fairly easy to identify Fireheart as the protagonist of the story, the antagonist is much more difficult to determine. In fact, there could be more than one antagonist. Watch the video below about protagonists and antagonists and then think about who is Fireheart's antagonist in this section.  (This annotation contains a video)
What strong emotions is Firepaw feeling about Cinderpaw at this moment?

Chapter 19

Have you ever been in a fight with a friend? If you have, perhaps you understand Fireheart's confused emotions. He is still angry with Graystripe, but also misses his friend. Have you ever simultaneously been angry and missed someone at the same time?
Fireheart and Sandpaw appear to be enjoying this patrol together. Can you list some examples of this enjoyment? Please go back into the text and find some evidence (exact sentences) to use in your answer.
Fireheart does not want Sandpaw to know about what Graystripe is up to. Spending time with a RiverClan cat is against the warrior code, no matter how much Graystripe loves Silverstream. It's very difficult for Fireheart to keep his friend's secret.  (This annotation contains an image)
Dramatic irony is when the reader, knows something that the other characters do not. Graystripe is attempting to stall the Clan from making the raid on RiverClan's territory.  What do we know about Graystripe that the other cats do not?
It's super dangerous to try and cross a cold, rushing river. There is no way that ThunderClan cats can cross over the river unfrozen. Thank StarClan an attack can't happen now. (This annotation contains an image)

Chapter 20

What are the main issues Graystripe and Fireheart are fighting over?
"The dawn light filtered through the ferns" is an example of the author using imagery. Imagery is when vivid descriptions help the reader to picture what the author is writing. Can you see the light just coming through the ferns and the trees into the nest? It does make for a pretty picture in your head.
Chapter 11 - 20 Quiz

Chapter 21

Fireheart accepts his sister's kittypet firstborn to bring back to the clan. He has been feeling so lonely and disconnected from where he came from and now has a small part of his former life. Do you think ThunderClan will accept this kittypet kit?  (This annotation contains an image)
The highlighted phrase is an example of what kind of literary device?
Fireheart takes a big chance by bringing Princess' kit to the ThunderClan camp. Do you think this kit will grow up to be a ThunderClan warrior? (This annotation contains an image)
Why did Bluestar name the kit Cloudkit?

Chapter 22

All the Clans are ruled by the moon. They mark time based on full moons and they schedule Gatherings based on clear full moon nights. It makes sense, as they don't have clocks, cell phones, etc.
It's interesting that with all the dishonesty and lying, Fireheart feels he cannot lie to Cinderpaw about her future as a warrior. Why do you think that is?
Cinderpaw clearly respects Fireheart despite his kittypet upbringing. And she has all the confidence in the world that Cloudkit will make a fine warrior. Let's hope that Fireheart starts to believe too.
How would you describe the Clan's treatment of Fireheart's kit?
The author has created so many different kinds of cats. Some have leopard spots, some are bracken colored, some are striped and others are all one color. Even Cloudkit is fairly unique. Although his fur may have been more suited to kittypet life....Take a look.  (This annotation contains an image)

Chapter 23

This is going to make for an interesting Gathering, as so much has happened. How do you think ShadowClan and RiverClan will respond to Bluestar when she questions why they are hunting in ThunderClan territory? Below is a picture of the Clan leaders gathered at Fourtrees.  (This annotation contains an image)
What literary device is in the highlighted sentence?

Chapter 24

How is Graystripe putting himself and the Clan in danger?
Which of the following gives you the sense that we are approaching the climax of this novel?
Yikes! Every time Fireheart decides that Tigerclaw is loyal to ThunderClan and his fears are not real -- Tigerclaw does something that changes his mind. It is unclear what he means by "plaything." Do you think Fireheart is just paranoid, or is Tigerclaw not to be trusted?

Chapter 25

Is there any other cat that might have a ShadowClan scent that could be hunting on ThunderClan territory? Who do you think is doing this -- ShadowClan, RiverClan, WindClan or some other cat?
Did the blood really "roar" in Fireheart's ears? This is an example of personification. Please watch the video below for an explanation of this literary device and then be on the lookout for more examples throughout the book.  (This annotation contains a video)

Chapter 26

Who comes to attack the ThunderClan camp when all the warriors are away on patrol?
How many cats are killed in the battle?
Wow! Did you see that coming? This book is so full of surprises! The author clearly knows how to keep things interesting with complex characters and plot twists. What will Yellowfang do next?
Why can't Cinderpaw fight alongside the other cats?
How does Bluestar feel about the decisions Fireheart made about sending Brackenpaw to find Tigerstar in order to leave the camp guarded?
Yellowfang, Bluestar and Fireheart have compassion for the wounded Brokenstar even after his attack on the camp. This must be difficult to do - have compassion for someone that has hurt you and the ones you care about. Again, the author creates some complex characters with varying emotions. Below is a picture of Brokenstar. (This annotation contains an image)

Chapter 27

If you could choose a warrior name for yourself, what would you choose and why?
If Cinderpaw can't become a warrior, what do you think would be a good job for her? It looks like Yellowfang is already planting the seed in Cinderpaw's mind.  (This annotation contains an image)
What is meant by the highlighted phrase?
How does Fireheart feel about his situation with Graystripe?

Chapter 28

The atmosphere in the camp has changed very quickly with the disappearance of Brindleface's kits. The night before was so happy with the naming ceremony of Sandpelt and Dustpelt. A good author keeps the action coming. This novel is non-stop!
After reviewing the highlighted paragraphs, which of the following is NOT an emotion Fireheart feels when he finds Cloudkit?
A thrush is a type of bird. It has a spotted chest area and sings a distinctive song. Watch the video below to see a thrush and to hear it sing. (This annotation contains a video)
Usually StarClan only talks to Clan leaders in their dreams, but it has happened several times to Fireheart. His dreams seem to foreshadow (predict) things to come. What warrior do you think Fireheart cannot trust?

Chapter 29

Which of the following sentences from the highlighted paragraph contain personification?
The battle has arrived! Based on what has happened throughout the novel and Fireheart's dream, make a prediction about what will happen during this battle.
They are about to enter into battle against the two other clans - ShadowClan and RiverClan. This is conflict, but what kind of conflict is it? Watch the video below to learn about the different types of conflict.  (This annotation contains a video)

Chapter 30

What cat is beginning to show Fireheart that he is a warrior not to be trusted?
This fight is vicious and violent. Everyone is involved and suffers wounds. Since ShadowClan has retreated, perhaps RiverClan will be next. Who do you think is going to prevail at this point?  (This annotation contains an image)
Why did Fireheart let Silverstream go?
Quiz Ch. 21 - 30
